The city of West Palm Beach was founded in 1894 by Henry Flagler. Originally, West Palm served as a community to house the servants who worked in the two grand hotels on the nearby island of Palm Beach. The first name of the city was "Westpalmbeach," but superstitious residents feared that a 13-letter word for a town name was a bad omen. Therefore, the name was changed to three words: West Palm Beach.

During the 1920s, downtown West Palm Beach, FL real estate began to take off, and the city soon became a rival of Miami. Not long after, a population decline took hold due to hurricanes and the Great Depression. It was not until the 1960s, with the completion of Palm Beach County's first enclosed shopping mall (the Palm Beach Mall) that downtown West Palm Beach, FL real estate began to pick up again. In the 1970s, a rapid renaissance took over the city's historic areas with beautiful new high-rises including Donald Trump's "Trump Plaza," as well as a unique downtown entertainment and shopping district known as CityPlace.

Today, West Palm Beach continues to thrive. There are several new residential buildings as well as a new downtown library and city hall which have recently been completed including City Palms, Cityplace South Tower and Two City Plaza.
